How your choices outside the classroom can improve your English

Monday, 18 November 2019, 10:07 AM By Patrick Rizio

Do you ever wonder what you can do to improve your English away from the classroom?  If you choose English instead of your native language in the following situations, you will see a big difference.

First of all, choose to live with people who don’t speak your language.  Of course, this could make life a little more challenging initially, but in the end you will see vastly quicker improvement.  Similarly, get a job where you need to speak English at work.  The two environments which you spend the most time in away from school are home and work, so the more you practice your English there, the faster you’ll improve, right?

Another choice to think about is what you do in your free time.  How often do you read?  No, not in your language, in English?  Not much?  Well, increasing the amount you read in English can make a huge difference in so many ways!  It exposes you to useful and interesting new vocabulary, as well as phrases that you can use when you write or speak.  It also reinforces your understanding of grammar and helps with spelling.  Reading more and learning new words and phrases will even improve your listening!

Well, reading isn’t just novels or books.  We all have things that we’re interested in, so why don’t you try reading articles about your favourite musician or sportsperson, in English?  It doesn’t really matter what the topic is – if it’s about something you like, you are more likely to continue reading.  Just find something online with your smartphone!

Finally, there’s something else that you can do with your smartphone, and it’s really simple.  That’s right, choose English as the system language on your phone!  It’s all part of being totally immersed while you are here studying.  If you’re using English at school, at home, at work, in your free time and also on your phone, then your English will definitely improve more quickly.

So, do you want to improve your English?  Choose English instead of your native language as often as you can – it really helps!

We hope this list has helped you find the extra practice you were looking for! Happy learning!
