When you want to learn a language – or learn anything, really - there are a couple of important things that will make it easier and more enjoyable for you.
You need to find a good school with a strong reputation. You need to have good teachers who want to help you. You need resources for you to study by yourself. But the most important thing you need is a positive and capable attitude.
Here are three things that successful language students do and think:
1. They don’t talk themselves down. Think about how you feel when study gets hard. You might say to yourself, ‘I can’t learn phrasal verbs!’ or ‘I’m stupid, that’s why I don’t remember the vocabulary.’ This kind of talk is very harmful and stops us from reaching our potential. Train your brain to say, ‘Wow, this is hard, but I’m getting it!’
2. They treat each day as a new day. Yesterday’s problems shouldn’t impact today’s efforts, and yesterday’s success shouldn’t make you relax or stop trying hard. Give every day your best.
3. They are interested and interesting. Great language students are interested in everything, even if they’ve studied it before or are revising it again. They understand that a positive attitude makes classes, homework, and self-study more fun.
So, study is a lot like life! What you put in is what you get out. How can you think differently to help your study plans?
