Understanding Australian accents

A lot of students think they have a good understanding of English until they step off the plane and arrive in Australia.  Then,  they think are Australians even speaking English? The Australian accent is definitely challenging for many international students. 

One way to improve is to watch Australian movies and TV shows. Here are a few suggestions:

MOVIES:

The Castle (1997)

Classic Australian movie about a family who are fighting to stop the government from taking their home away.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)

Adventures of 3 drag queen performers travelling around Australia performing to enthusiastic but also some not so enthusiastic crowds.

The Dish (2000)

True Australian story about a group of scientists looking after a satellite dish that may be the world’s only hope to capture images of the first man on the moon.

Kenny (2006)

A mockumentary movie about the life of a plumber who delivers and maintains portable toilets for big events.

Lantana (2001)

A story about a death, a cheating husband and a disappearance in a complex storyline that unravels throughout the movie.

Bran Nue Dae (2009)

An Aboriginal child runs away from his Catholic boarding school and tries desperately to make it back to his family home.

Rabbit Proof Fence (2002)

A look at the history of Aboriginal families in Australia and a story about 3 mixed race girls who were removed from their family and try to find their way back.

Red Dog (2011)

A beautiful about a man and his dog.

Paper Planes (2015)

A schoolboy learns the art of paper plane making to deal with a death in his family.

TV SHOWS

Round the twist (1989 – 2001)

Adventures of a father and his two children who live in an old lighthouse.

Neighbours (1985 - )

Australia’s longest-running drama following the lives of the residents who live in Ramsay Street, Melbourne.

Home and Away (1988 - )

Similar to Neighbours but instead set in a fictional Australian town called Summer Bay and follows the residents of that area.

We Can Be Heroes (2005)

A mockumentary following the lives of 5 fictitious people who are nominated for the Australian of the Year award.

Summer Heights High (2007)

A tv series filmed as a documentary around 3 main characters; a drama teacher, exchange student and a troublemaker called Jonah.

Bogan Pride (2008)

A bogan in Australian slang means someone who takes doesn’t care about their appearance, is quite lazy or unsophisticated. 

This show is based around the life of a stereotypical teenage bogan girl.
